WHY SHOULD WE CHANT ‘OM’?

-Some persons say that as speaking ‘bread bread’ does not kill hunger, likewise speaking ‘om om’ does not serve any purpose even if, ‘om’ is the personal name of God but this notion is wrong. Bread is a name of a non-living thing but ‘om’ is a name of a living thing. As very less effort is needed to think of a thing named as ‘Bread’, in the same way, meaning of the word ‘om’ springs up in our heart, the instant we speak out this word. If the actual thing does not come in our mind by speaking out its name, then, the very purpose of speaking the name is destroyed. Generally, while pronouncing words of a foreign language, the meanings of those uttered words do not get flashed in our memory. As such, pronouncement of the word ‘om’ is meaningful only if, it generates the thought of the thing named as ‘om’.

-There is a notion that the word ‘om’ is like a seed and speaking the word ‘om’ does not require contemplation of the attributes of God at the same time. This notion is not right because before sowing a seed, preparation of land is essential. A seed sown on unproductive land never germinates. The seed of ‘om’ is sown in the soil of ‘मन’. For preparation of soil of ‘मन’, good company, study, praying, stuti  et cetra are resorted to. Success comes to the people who resort to chanting of ‘om’ after purifying their ‘मन’.
